Enact Legislature To Ensure Police Are Finally Held Accountable
Enact Legislature To Ensure Police Are Finally Held Accountable
Why this petition matters
For years we have seen systemic racism and police brutality unfold while our police act with impunity. Our tax dollars are supposed to be used so that our police forces may serve and protect us, yet it's clear this isn't being done in a fair manner.
This epidemic needs to be cleared up. We need change now. We need to stand up for each other and make this change a reality.
As a start, I propose three legislative actions we should take immediately to get this problem under control:
1: Remove qualified immunity. When our supreme court invented qualified immunity in 1982 they made it nearly impossible to hold a police officers liable for crimes they may commit. Regardless if their actions are unconstitutional, intentional, or malicious.
2: Police pension funds should be targeted in lawsuits, not our tax dollars. This way, "good cops" are incentivized to keep the bad ones in check. Let's end the Blue Code of Silence.
3: Police should be required to carry their own liability insurance. If they can't uphold their oath to protect and serve the people of this country, insurance will drop them and they won't be able to find work just by moving to a new jurisdiction.
These three actions would be a positive start to true police reform. Only if we stand together for change will we be able to overcome the systemic racism and police brutality that has gone unpunished for so long.
Please sign this petition and share it far and wide. It will then be delivered to our elected officials so that they may take action. Action that is needed now.
