To continue the "political revolution" Bernie Sanders calls for, he should support the Green Party and its likely candidate for president, Jill Stein, if he loses the Democratic primary. He must reject the so-called "lesser-evil" of neoliberal Hillary Clinton and help us build an alternative political institution that can challenge the corporate Democrat and Republican Parties.
In the 1980s, Bernie Sanders was publicly calling for the need to build such a progressive third party of national scale:
In 1989, Bernie Sanders said that "We do not have an effective national political movement which is prepared to fight for power and which challenges the basic assumptions and priorities of the corporate-controlled Democratic and Republican parties—two political parties which have no substantive ideological differences and are, in reality, one party—the party of the ruling class."
In 1988, Bernie Sanders offered this criticism of the Jesse Jackson Democratic presidential campaigns: "Jesse believes that serious social change is possible within the Democratic Party. I don’t."
What has changed since then? Why has Sanders joined the Democrats when that party has only gotten worse? Instead of supporting the Democrats, Sanders should listen to himself circa the 1980s and support Jill Stein and the Green Party rather than Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.
JILL STEIN today: "A majority of Americans agree that the Democrats and Republicans have failed us, and that we need a new major party. We the people deserve straight talk and real solutions to the economic, social, and ecological crises brought on by both corporate political parties."
JILL STEIN today: "I'm running with the only national party that does not take corporate funding—that is the Green Party. . . . That's essentially the difference between my campaign and other campaigns—that we are part of a PARTY that does not accept corporate money and that does not accept money from lobbyists nor from corporate CEOs or surrogates of corporations."
We urge Sanders to support Jill Stein and the Green Party explicitly and in other ways, such as supporting Stein on the campaign trail, should he lose the Democratic primary.
