Sahrawi ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN a lancé cette pétition adressée à Bernd Scheifele et à

We, the undersigned, demand that Heidelberg cement halt all its exploitation of occupied Western Sahara until the Saharawi people have been assured of self-determination.

Why is this important?

A few kilometers outside of the capital city of Western Sahara, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement is operating a cement production plant. The factory is owned by Ciments du Maroc (CIMAR), which in turn is part of the German multinational via an Italian subsidiary, Italcementi.
Heidelberg Cement, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of building materials, has become the target of the Sahrawi people because of its illegal activities in the Occupied Western Sahara Territories.

We sign this petition demanding a halt to illegal mining activity in Western Sahara, and we call upon the Heidelberg Cement to put an end to this clearly illegal activity, which constitutes blunt and ugly colonial exploitation of a land that Morocco had forcefully seized.

Western Sahara, a mineral-rich territory controlled by military force by Morocco since 1975. The United Nations' classifies it as a "non-self-governing territory" and many of its people live in refugee camps across the border, in Algeria.[1] [2]

On all maps on HeidelbergCement's website, Western Sahara is illustrated as being part of Morocco. No country in the world, nor the UN, consider Western Sahara as part of Morocco. The Court of Justice of the EU in a ruling on 21 December 2016 clarified the status of the territories of Morocco and Western Sahara to be "distinct and separate". The Advocate General of the court on 10 January 2018 elaborated further on the status of Morocco in the territory as an occupying power, underlining that international humanitarian law applies. [3]

Western Sahara is still waiting for a referendum for the local population promised in 1991..

The cement trade from Western Sahara implicates Heidelberg Cement and Germany in the plunder of another country’s natural resources.

By having business with Morocco in occupied Western Sahara, Heidelberg Cement is indulging in Morocco’s violations against Saharauis.

Morocco use Heidelberg Cement’s products and materials to build settlements in occupied land and reinforce the mined wall to kill and separate between Sahrawi families.  [4]

We wish to know what steps Heidelberg Cement have taken to obtain the consent of the people of Western Sahara to take their natural resources.

Until there is an agreed settlement on a path to self-determination, as the United Nations sets out, and consent given by the recognised representatives of Western Sahara, then all imports from this occupied territory should be suspended.
