Honor Dr. MLK Jr in Bernards School District by taking the national holiday off

We moved to Basking Ridge three MLK days ago, at that time it was enough to keep our kids out of school and celebrate his legacy as a family. It is no longer enough to celebrate this day in our town in isolation. The kids go back to school on Tuesday with disrespectful comments from their peers. Not because their peers are bad kids, but because they have been in a school system that does not acknowledge the magnitude of his legacy. Our school district made an intentional choice that was good enough (to some) years ago and now it is time to make the right choice for today. Let's acknowledge the outward image of our town is not one of inclusion.
MLK day is not an African American holiday, it is a National Holiday to celebrate the end of segregation and discrimination based on our differences. Our differences are the strength of a great America. There is no denying our current political climate is influencing our children and our schools. Let's be intentional by making the right decision to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Let's show our children his impact is important to our town, important to everyone in our town. Let's show them that they too can lead change.
