Berks County Residents to local leaders, "RELIGHT OUR HISTORIC COURTHOUSE!"

For over 50 years, Reading's skyline was illuminated by the Berks County Courthouse. In 2011-12, the lights disappeared when the County renovated the courthouse. Due to an exaggerated estimate to update the lights with LED technology, the  Commissioners voted to eliminate them! No public opinion had been sought and no additional estimates were obtained. A historic building, along with a 50+ year tradition, went completely dark. The late Al Boscov had quoted that his vision for downtown Reading was that "Penn Street would light up like Las Vegas!" The Doubletree Hotel and other projects are helping to bring new life to the City. We feel that it is now time for the Courthouse lights to make a dramatic comeback and to join in the efforts of surrounding projects as we restore the image of our city! New, LED lights would operate at 80% LESS than the previous lights that were eliminated. Additionally, an illuminated courthouse would display a wonderful "nightly" memorial to our past, and to the hope men like Al Boscov inserted into our city. Join us in encouraging the County of Berks, the City of Reading, and local businesses in restoring one of our greatest local traditions! The 3 County Commissioners (Leinbach, Bardhardt, & Scott) are the leaders with the power to make this happen. They can be contacted directly (repeatedly, if necessary) at commissioners@countyofberks.com. With economic development initiatives now producing results in the city, it's time for our skyline to come back to life! Please sign & share!!
