Karen Zapata started this petition to Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education

Berkeley Unified School District is facing a 10% reduction in the funding that was expected for the upcoming school year. This means cuts totaling over $7 Million.  To give a sense of the enormity of this cut, our district has made approximately $5 Million in cuts over the last 5 years total.  We are now asked to make an even larger cut in just one school year.

Our schools are made safe and whole by the tireless work of our classified staff.  These are people like instructional assistants, food service workers, safety officers, bus drivers, and secretaries.  In an historical moment like ours, when calls to remove the police from our schools and communities are being made, we must make sure that we have a network of care and support for our students.  Our classified staff are just those people: workers who care and support the children our district.

Our schools deserve the best.  We CANNOT stand for any cuts to these workers jobs and livelihood.  Please stand with us to proactively demand that BUSD classified staff positions are not threatened in this time of austerity and budget crises.
