Berkeley Mayor & City Council: Support Sunday Streets Berkeley!

This petition had 1,024 supporters

Many of you are asking, “When is the next Sunday Streets Berkeley?" It is a question we heard over and over on October 14, 2012, when more than 40,000 people came to Shattuck Avenue to cycle, stroll, skate, dance, play and connect with their community and urban environment in a transformative way.

Open Streets are a powerful (and fun!) way to create civic engagement in community sustainability and we want to make it happen again and again!

The future of Sunday Streets Berkeley is determined by whether or not the city becomes a reliable, ongoing financial partner for years to come - a committment that has led to the success of Open Streets across the country. Urge your Council representative, the Council as a whole, and Mayor Tom Bates to make it happen.

Let the Berkeley City Council know you loved Sunday Streets Berkeley and you want it to become a regular event. Sufficient City support reflects the City’s commitment to promoting community cohesion, public health, local business, sustainable living, and Berkeley’s unique values and character.

To make Sunday Streets Berkeley a sustainable, vibrant program, it must have City support. And it needs to happen multiple times per year, in the true spirit and definition of Open Streets.

Sunday Streets Berkeley is produced by Livable Berkeley, in association with the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Ecology Center, Downtown Berkeley AssociationNorth Shattuck Association, and the Office of Mayor Tom Bates.

Much of the money necessary to make Sunday Streets Berkeley possible - event production, community outreach, publicity, and program management - will come from private sponsorship. Livable Berkeley and Sunday Streets Coalition members fundraise and contribute these resources.
