Rene Hightower started this petition to Berkeley County School Board and

BCSD is implementing a lottery for new students entering the kindergarten class at Cane Bay Elementary. Supposedly there are "no exceptions." However, students registered in the k4 program the previous academic school year, are automatically enrolled. There is no sibling clause for new k5 students with brothers or sisters who already attend CBE. They can potentially be separated. Studies have proven siblings being separated for their studies can make it difficult for them to form attachments, create a healthy self image, and grades can be negatively impacted. Also, families who bought in Cane Bay plantation were told specifically when buying that their children will attend Cane Bay schools. Now there's uncertainty. This is all too much for a child starting a new school and new environment. For most families when buying a home the district and the schools their children will attend weighs heavy, and for it to be a matter of luck is absurd. All houses on the market in this area should have a full disclosure that it's a possibility your child will be bussed across town two times in one day. Something needs to change now. Obviously a new school can't be built over night, but there's more to this. Let's find a way to keep our children together, and grow together!
