The Tom Bates Sports Complex, located west of I-80 on the frontage road between Gilman Street and University in West Berkeley plays an integral role in many locals’ lives. This sports complex is also known as Gilman Grass, Gilman North Turf, and Gilman South Turf.

Numerous local soccer clubs (like Spurs FC, Mavericks, ABSC and more), along with other field sports pay for permits to practice or host home games here. Not only do Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito and Richmond residents participate in club sports here, Berkeley hosts numerous sports clubs from as far away as Livermore, Napa, Newark, and more, who are playing their ‘away’ games at the Tom Bates Sports Complex.

The current portable bathrooms are in dire condition, and they are simply not sanitary. It is a public health matter because thousands of kids and adults have only this bathroom option when they are playing sports at Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex.

With the approval of Measure T1 and the $100M bond, we are petitioning for proper bathrooms to be developed and maintained at both the North and South end of the turf and grass fields.

When visitors come to Berkeley to play an ‘away’ game, we want them to have access to clean bathrooms. Everyone at the Gilman fields deserves access to clean, sanitary restrooms.

Many families pay sports club fees that go toward permits to use these city fields; we strongly urge Berkeley’s city council and mayor to approve funding for proper bathrooms to be developed and maintained at these important fields in West Berkeley.

We also ask for the City of Berkeley to consider developing this sports complex further, which would include better lighting in the parking lots, plus facilities like a club house with vendors selling healthy food options, which could provide funding to keep the bathrooms clean. There are numerous car break ins that happen in this parking lot, especially when it gets dark. There are many players and families who would patronize food vendors if they were selling from a clubhouse.

We urge you to keep this valuable sports complex clean and updated. It is such an important part of keeping East Bay locals healthy through team sports!

Thank you for reading our petition.
