The Good people of Benue State are farmers who engage in mostly subsistence farming.
Recently, the people of Benue State have come under heavy attacks from herdsmen who move around with their cattle. Last week, over 50 people were killed in Buruku Local Government area of Benue state. Last year, over 100 people lost their lives to the attacks by the herdsmen in Agatu LGA, Gwer West and Gwer East Local Government Areas and other parts of Benue State.
The herdsmen who are heavily armed cannot be contained by the local farmers whose livelihood contrasts with that of the herdsmen.
What needs to be done:
Recognizing this problem, the Governor of Benue State forwarded a bill to the Benue State House of Assembly titled "Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill". If passed, the bill will help eliminate clashes between the two groups which emanate from cattle destroying farm produce. The Benue State House of Assembly needs to pass this bill to avoid further loss of life.
Why does it bother me?
My own people have come under heavy attacks and over 1000 people have lost their lives. Last month, my wife's village was attacked and many people were killed. This week Sunday, the people of Buruku Local Government and Gwer East were heavily attacked and hundreds have lost their lives. The conflict is still ongoing.
This is the beginning of the farming season. If these attacks are not contained, the farmers won't be able to farm. Millions will face starvation and hunger next year if nothing is done about this.
