Dress Code Equality

Dress Code Equality

I feel that the dress code used in schools is geared towards girls and is extremely restricting on what girls can and cannot wear and is extremely lenient on what boys can wear. Some examples of this in the dress code are the rules for tank tops are the same for boys and girls however the majority of tank tops for girls are not made with 3” straps so therefore girls can not really wear tank tops. Another example of this is the rule about shorts, nearly all of women’s shorts except for basketball shorts do not follow this criteria, however nearly all men’s shorts follow this criteria. Another example of this is in the Fulbright Junior High handbook there are 13 rules based on clothing and out of all 13 there are 2 barely Focused on boys and 5 mainly Focused on girls. One of the main reasons girls are not allowed to wear these things are because they are seen as “distracting” to the people around them even though I have talked to my peers about this and not one of them have said that they find shoulders, backs, legs, etc. distracting, and even if they do find them distracting it is not our fault, it is theres. The girls being dress coded are having their education affected and having time taken away from them learning because of being dress coded even though it is someone else’s problem. In my 8 years of school I have never once seen a boy get dress coded, but it is just the 4th week of school and multiple female friends have already been dress coded or warned about the dress code. Please help me in making a difference in my school district, and taking a step forward in gender equality. Every signature counts.
