Commencement speakers are supposed to be inspirational. They should motivate their audiences to go out and do something meaningful with their degrees.

This year's (2015) undergraduate commencement speaker is the CEO of the USOC. It is no secret that Bentley University has close ties with Boston2024, the committee seeking the Olympic bid in 2024. Bentley University's President Gloria Larson, is a co-chair on the College and University Engagement Committee. Bentley also stands to gain other things should the bid be approved by the IOC.

Commencement should not be used as a political move by any university, but that is exactly what Bentley University is accomplishing with this speaker. Bentley University has had a variety of incredible commencement speakers in recent years that have inspired and motivated their graduates to change the world. It is disappointing that the Class of 2015 must sit through commencement and have to hear about how wonderful the Olympics are. A graduation is not the place for this type of endeavor, especially given the low favorability of Boston2024 in the Boston area.

We strongly urge the university to change the commencement speaker for the Undergraduate Commencement ceremony as the bid for the Olympics is far too controversial. We are confident that the university can someone equally powerful and motivational without bringing politics into the situation.
