Bring Public Umbilical Cord Blood Banking to the Canadian East Coast

Public umbilical cord blood banking is a life saving opportunity that is currently only available within Canada in Ottawa, Brampton, Edmonton, Vancouver and Quebec.
Publicly banking stem cell rich cord blood has the potential to be used in the treatment of individuals requiring stem cell or bone marrow transplants that are otherwise unable to find a match. Currently, Canadian Blood Services has no plan to expand public cord banking in the country, leaving a large population of life saving material being literally thrown in the trash.
Bringing public cord banking to the east coast would create a greater public supply of stem cells that could be donated to a matched individual in need. Not only would this have a significant impact on those individuals and their families, but on our communities and the healthcare system as well. An investment into public cord blood banking now would reduce strain on the healthcare system in the future.
The opportunity to save lives is available; why are we not tapping into this resource? By signing this petition you will be showing your support for the expansion of cord blood banking to the east coast and the chance to save many lives.
