Benign tumor sufferers should be allowed treatment on the NHS
Why this petition matters
According to the NHS website (05.06.22) "When a wound heals, it leaves a scar. A keloid scar is one that becomes thick, lumpy, raised and larger than the original wound. " However there is no mention regarding what a Keloid really is and how it affects the quality of life of its sufferers. Anyone can develop a keloid however it is more predominant in people from Africa and African Caribbean and South Indian communities (NHS website accessed 01.08.22)
Google, 01.08.22 states that "Dr John Glees is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist (specialising in radiation therapy and chemotherapy treatments for a whole variety of cancers). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists UK and M.D. with Honours and a Thesis on brain tumours. Dr Glees trained in England, Germany and the United States."
Dr Glees website www.johnglees.com website shows his knowledge, skills and experience in this field. He raises awareness that these are benign however can be treated. Some keloid suffers have no physical symptoms however others experience pain, intense itching, discharge, discolouration and also it affects their mental health and emotional well-being however it is still not being available on the NHS.
According to www.johnglees.com (accessed 01.08.22) Studies have shown that radiotherapy is highly effective in reducing keloid recurrence. A single dose of post operative superficial radiotherapy usually given within 24hrs after surgical excision prevents recurrence in as many as 90% of cases. (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery:May 2003 - Volume 111 - Issue 6 - pp 1853-1859. Treatment of Keloids by Surgical Excision and Immediate Postoperative Single-Fraction Radiotherapy)
I had a large keloid due to abdominoplasty, liposuction and I suffered for two years as my keloid became worse after trying different creams, ointments and massage. It affected my work and quality of life, it was so thick you could see it through my clothes and it hated anything on it. I was going to try to live with it however I came across research and met DR Glees he advised me on a surgeon and also that I would require the radiotherapy within 24hours. I decided that I would get it done however the costs which was very high so I was woried I wouldnt be able to afford the treatment. Thank god, my late, great mother who died of lung cancer which was caused due to her ovarian cancer! She got treatment however it was greatly delayed her diagnosis, she then had a few more years before the cancer returned! Neglected by prpfessionals the cancer came back which she suffered before she died. My mother had left me some money and I was able to self pay my treatment. Many can't because they have no access to funding and it's seen as cosmetic rather than medicine. However it is it is aesthetic medicine and can treat the symptoms affected by those suffering from this condition and give them a better qualityof life.
I would like for parliament to look into this and pass legislation to make it available on the National health service and also raise awareness that all of medical community, GPs, NUrses, Consultatants are aware of this specialist area and be able to identify and how and what to refer to when required. I would also like more funding in research into cancer in geanaeral especially early stages as this could prevent not only the suffering of those affected and those involved but also the costs to the National Health service as a whole. We need to save more lives and make the world a better place!
