Jacqui Edwards started this petition to Ben Wyatt

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were the first humans in Australia for over 60 000 years, but when the first fleet arrived in Australia in 1788 their life became very hard and they have been through much discrimination. This eventually led to suicide because of how much they went through socially and emotionally.

Suicide is when someone intentionally causes their own death. This is something that has been a big issue in our society lately. Some reasons why Indigenous Australians want to commit suicide includes: poverty, racism, poor living conditions, no trust, or access to support services and lack of self-esteem and identity. In the past 50 years both governments have not taken the responsibly of addressing the situation of the indigenous people.

95% of Indigenous people in Australia are affected by suicide. If you look at these figures indigenous people don’t live as long as other Australians.

This petition is for the minister for indigenous affairs: Ben Wyatt, his role is to help the Indigenous people of WA, and he can do this by reducing the amount of people committing suicide. He could do this by increasing funding to specialised programs that focus on suicide prevention in the Indigenous community, by helping raise awareness and encouraging people to open up about their feelings.

Thank you for all your support.
