Transportation is a vital element to providing the youth of our community with a quality education. School buses are the main form of transport for many children and teens who are unable to walk to school or have a parent drive them. According to atu.org, over half of all students use the school bus, making it the primary way for our children to get to school.

But what about getting to the school bus, and what about after school? Getting to the school bus can be quite a task, especially if you live a considerable ways away from your stop, which a good amount of students do.

For many kids and teens, skateboarding is a simple and practical form of transportation to and from the bus stop, as well as for commuting between after school activities.

Allowing our students to bring skateboards to the buses would make for easier transportation for them, which is what we want.

Besides the learning itself, transportation plays a huge role in school life, and if we don't allow children to go to school the most comfortable way possible, it may infringe on other parts of school life.

Even after school, skateboards are important. Allowing independence for our teens to quickly get to their occupations as well as participate in choice sports. Allowing skateboards on the bus would therefore allow more freedom to our students as well as improving their social life and teaching responsibility, all of which are very useful and important traits to have.

According to the district rules, skateboards are not allowed on buses because they are considered, "Heavy, sharp, bulky and/or articles, which may be hazardous in the event of an accident or emergency stops." However, they permit instruments that can be placed between the legs. If a trumpet, an instrument which in its case reaches the length of around 24 inches can be held between the legs safely, why can't a skateboard, which is just inches longer, be held? I find that to be pretty unfair, considering the fact that skateboarding is not only a hobby just as much as music is, but also is as vital form of transportation and should be allowed.

By signing this petition, you will allow our students to bring skateboards onto buses, further improving their school life, and creating a happy, healthy school environment for kids who need it the most.
