Open U.S. Borders to Syrian Refugees

This petition is meant to pressure our leaders into action to listen to the stories of fathers and mothers and children trying to escape from Syria and the Middle East. This petition is to remind our leaders that every child on this planet deserves to grow up in a safe environment, free from war, free from rape, free from disease, free from hunger. This petition is for all children and parents trying to flee, and for two-year old Aylin Kurdi, who is the same age as my son, and for his father, who after losing his two sons and wife in a boat that sank while they tried to escape, told the press: "Everything I was dreaming of is gone. I want to bury my children and sit beside them until I die."
For him, and for all mothers and fathers and men and women trying to escape Syria or other war-torn Middle East countries we say to our leaders:
The time for the U.S. to act is now.
Dear Senator Cardin:
We write today to ask that you make a greater effort to work with and pressure the Obama Administration to play a larger role in helping to alleviate the Syrian refugee crisis, and to help evacuate Syrians and others feeling persecution in the Middle East to resettle in the United States.
As the ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, you are in a special position: you are not only intimately involved in crafting policy in the Senate, you also have first-hand and detailed information about the tragedies that are occurring around the world on any given day. The refugee crisis is the tragedy of our day, and the United States has sat idly by for too long already. We must act. You must act.
There have been many times in our history when we have not acted to help refugees – when, instead, our reaction has been to close borders and turn away boats of desperate people. Tragically, this is a recurring theme in our history: that despite being a nation of immigrants, we often refuse to help those immigrants who are in the most need. Do not let this time in history be another time the United States fails to live up to the promise of the words on Lady Liberty - accept the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses.
We, the undersigned, urge you to make a public commitment to using your power and leverage to push the United States to act, and to act quickly. Sen. Cardin, you are a father and a grandfather. You can imagine the suffering of the Syrian father who recently watched his wife and two sons drown – when he was trying only to provide a better, safer life for them. Use your office and your ability to effect change to do what you can now to open up America’s borders to the people suffering in the Middle East. Use your voice to make a change for the fathers, mothers, daughters, and sons who are trying desperately to make a life in a country without daily bombings, systemized rape and sex slave trading, and lack of food and water. The time to act is now.
Thank you, in advance, for your leadership. Marylanders, the country, and the world, are all watching and waiting.
