Martin Chiesl started this petition to Belmont University

The coronavirus has caused problems for everyone, and unfortunately these problems do not always have easy solutions. As a result of Belmont's campus closing, students living in on-campus apartments and suites have received pro-rated refunds for room and board. We believe that this was a good choice on behalf of the university. However, students participating in Belmont West this semester have not received any refunds whatsoever.

We understand that the financial situation for Belmont West students is completely different than for students living on campus. We understand that the program fee itself is not sufficient to cover all the costs associated with the program, especially the cost of living at AVA Toluca Hills, which is a very expensive facility. It is very generous of Belmont to offer a program like this, despite technically losing money on it.

But whether the university experiences a profit or loss does not change a simple fact: Each of us participating in Belmont West paid $5,500 for the program fee, with the understanding that we would be able to stay in Los Angeles and participate in several group activities, including a trip to Disneyland. But we did not receive everything that we paid for, and we did not receive a refund.

We are NOT asking for a refund on housing with AVA Toluca Hills. We are NOT asking for a refund on tuition. We are asking that at a minimum, Belmont University should issue us a refund for the cost of the Disneyland tickets.

Two other activities that were promised, but were unable to happen, were the closing dinner and the Dodgers game. It would be preferred if Belmont would refund the cost of these activities as well.

We are deeply sorry for all the problems and heartache caused by this pandemic, and we are grateful that Belmont is committed to doing its best for students.

As Belmont West is a small minority of the student population, we feel that we have been overlooked.

Thank you,

--Belmont West Students and Families
