Stephanie Schroeder started this petition to President of Belmont University Bob Fisher

This is a petition for the class of 2021 to be able to walk across the stage at our commencement ceremony.

The current plan is to have students stand up from their seat when their name is called. We are all taking this pandemic very seriously and want nothing more than for it to be over. Therefore, we have no problem wearing masks and having our temperature checked during entry to commencement. However, standing up without walking seems excessive. If students are to walk across the stage with masks on, we will be able to maintain safe distances and refrain from hand shaking.

During class and Belmont required activity, we are with other students, wearing masks and following protocol. The idea of walking doesn’t make much of difference than standing as we will still be within the same distance from our peers. Walking gives students the moment to be proud of their accomplishments and for their family to see them be individually celebrated. You only get one chance to walk the stage, and have that feeling of victory and accomplishment. Just standing up in a crowd of tons of students seems less special, and not necessary.

We have worked extremely hard to get to this point and have given up a lot to stay safe during the pandemic. We feel that we can be just as safe walking with masks as we can standing with masks. This may not seem much different but the process of walking is very special to graduating students.

This petition will show how important this is to the graduating students of the Class of 2021. Even though we have a graduation with only 2 guests allowed, we feel as if walking is a simple gesture to allow us some sort of normalcy. We have all worked so hard throughout our years at belmont, and we deserve to walk the stage.
