Concerned Belmont Parents started this petition to Belmont School Committee and Belmont School District Administration

We are a group of Belmont families who believe that our schools need to remain safe for students and educators and that the education provided by the district must remain as equitable as possible.

This has been a difficult year for everybody and we all want our children back in school. Hybrid and remote learning are not convenient or easy for most families. However, these innovative options have allowed families who choose to do so to send their child(ren) to school in a way that is reasonably safe for students and educators in the midst of this global pandemic. These models have also allowed the district’s highest needs students to attend school in person. To eradicate a program that has been working well enough for many students and families - for at best 8-10 weeks of full in person school- is disruptive and potentially harmful. To not follow the CDC's most recent guideline of maintaining at least 6 feet of distance to the greatest extent possible even in areas of low transmission substantially increases the risks for in person students and already overtaxed teachers. This is especially concerning given the increase in viral variants and Governor Baker's rapid reopening of high risk activities such as full capacity indoor dining and concerts. Additionally, with more students in classrooms, the ability to provide an equitable education for remote students would likely decrease. Remote students have already received a less than equitable education this year.

We call upon the Belmont School Committee and the Belmont School Department Administrators to push back against any potential mandates and maintain the current hybrid and remote learning options through the end of this current school year. We are so close to turning a big corner, with more vaccinations and warmer weather coming. The actions we take now will determine how quickly we get back “normal.” Let’s put our children and educators into the best position for a safe, healthy return to full in person learning in September.
