DO NOT DISCRIMINATE
In june of 2011 Bella Luna posted an add on craigslist looking for employees for their store that they were opening in market square in knoxville, tn. My girlfriend, Niya replied to the add. She was hired on as a dishwasher. She was moved up to prep. She was promised a raise for what seemed like forever; when she finally received the raise it was not the $10/hour that she was told. It was $9.50/hour. She took it and just bared with it. She liked her job. About 3 weeks ago she made the choice to get a second job. She got a second job at another store that is on the square. She noticed that her hours at Bella Luna was getting less and less. She was a full-time employee. She recevied a text message from a co- worker saying that they were taking her off the schedule. So she went to work the next morning to talk to the store owner. and the store owner could not give her any reason as to why. All the owner said was that they had to make some cuts. Niya asked who was getting cut and the store owner said nothing. just tucked her head down and cried. yesterday Niya was on craigslist and Bella Luna had yet another ad on craigslist saying they are hiring kitchen help.
I want to point out that Niya was the only openly gay employee and also the only african- american employee. The time Niya spent at Bella Luna she was loyal and went above and beyond her employee standard for them. Niya was the lowest paid employee. She feels that she was "laid off" because she was open about her sexuality. Knoxville has anti-discrimination law. Stating you can not discriminate any one based on their gender identity, sexual oriention. Niya feels that she was laid off her job because of her sexual oriention. please sign my pettion to say it is not ok to be "laid off and under paid" for being gay.
