S W started this petition to Belfast Mayor & City Council

So many residents of Belfast, Maine, and Waldo County, travel to Bangor, Augusta or Rockland often, weekly or monthly, to get groceries and other things.  This petition seeks to encourage the City Council of Belfast, and the Mayor, to, in good faith, look into the possibility of bringing a big box store to the City of Belfast in order to promote healthy competition for the grocery, home goods, clothing and related markets.

This would result in lower prices, more options, additional jobs, for the residents of Belfast.  A large percentage of Waldo County residents are at or below the income poverty level, elderly, or both, and would benefit greatly from having a big box store in Belfast.  Perhaps one that could be a stop on the local Midcoast Connector bus line.

While Belfast is a beautiful little coastal Maine town, on the coast of Vacationland, people still have to live here, exist here, raise their children here, and SURVIVE here.  These people, the people not on vacation here, need a local alternative to shopping that would promote competition and encourage local vendors to bring their prices in line with mainstream competition that is available to the residents of larger, more urban, areas.

I don’t think the City Council members realize how many residents would like to see this come to fruition.  With the power of social media, let’s show them!

After reading this article it seems like to city council purposely did a round robin around the issue and purposely caused the big box stores to not be allowed above 75,000 sq ft. Even though public ballots in 2000 and 2004 proved that people wanted them to be allowed in Belfast. Why would the city council override what the citizens wanted in 2000 and 2004? Can anyone help me answer this question, just doing my research.
