Sharon Hunter started this petition to Belfast City Council

Belfast city council have decided to close Avoniel Leisure Centre and Templemore complex at the same time, and move everything to the new Lisnasharrah centre. The new centre does not have the capacity to accommodate all the club's and lessons that use Avoniel and Templemore. We want Avoniel kept open, in the interim for the two years when there will be no swimming provision for the people in the heart of East Belfast. The new centre has no facilities for the Cardiac rehab class, steam room, sauna, badminton, table tennis, and other general leisure facilities

Keep Avoniel open at least until the new Templemore complex is ready. As rate payers we are entitled to leisure services in our area

As you know there is a proposal to close avoneil leisure centre and turn it into a football centre.
I have been attending classes and swimming in the centre and I've made a discovery.
Avoniel is not just a leisure centre, it's a community. It's a community of folks who are the slightly older generation 50+. They know each other, they really care about each other and they make newcomers like me so welcome.
Avoniel is used mostly for classes, swimming lessons and aquafit sessions, as well as the dreaded football.
It's meeting the emotional and mental health needs of a whole community.
The council wants to move this community, many of whom are disabled in some way, or don't drive, up to the new complex at Lisnasharrah.
They are in essence leaving a huge part of east Belfast with nothing but a football arena, and this wee community that I have been welcomed to be a part of will be no more.
All of the classes in the centre are really well attended, mostly by people within walking distance of the centre.
I would like to ask you to step forward and speak for this fantastic community of people. In these days where the focus is on mental health, we would like to remind the council that older people's mental health is every bit as important as young people's!  The staff in The centre are amazing, and it's a real hive of activity. we would like to fight to have the centre refurbished instead of demolished.
