Excavate the Belews Creek Coal Ash Pond
This petition made change with 340 supporters!
The community of Belews Creek and Walnut Cove have been suffering from cancer as well as breathing and neurological problems for decades from the pollution caused by Duke Energy's Belews Creek Steam Station. This community has advocated for Duke Energy to excavate the coal ash from the Belews Creek pond and move it to an on-site, lined landfill and away from ground and surface waters. The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality is seeking input for their coal ash closure plans. Please help us call for excavation and help end the suffering.
We the undersigned, petition the State of North Carolina as follows:
We petition the State to require Duke Energy to remove its coal ash from its leaking, unlined pit at Belews Creek and move it to dry lined storage out of our groundwater and away from Belews Lake, the Dan River, and the creeks and streams around the ash pond.
We petition the State to reject Duke Energy’s plan to leave its coal ash sitting in the groundwater at Belews Creek, where it will keep polluting our groundwater, lakes, and rivers.
We petition the State to give our community the same protections as other communities in North Carolina, as every community in South Carolina, and as the Governor of Virginia has proposed for all communities near Dominion’s unlined coal ash sites. Our families and our community deserve the same protections.
It is past time for our government to listen to the community—not Duke Energy’s consultants— about what our community needs. We need Duke Energy to clean up its coal ash and stop the water pollution.
