Ensure Beckfoot School supports the arts and non academic subjects
Why this petition matters
Beckfoot School have introduced a compulsory approach to the EBACC (English Baccalaureate) meaning all children will now have to take a language and either history or geography at GCSE. This is in line with targets from government to have 75% of children with EBACC in 2022 riding to 90% in 2025.
In addition to this, the remaining TWO options are limited with children unable to choose two ‘similar’ subjects for example fine art and textiles.
This contradicts what was said to be the school ethos of celebrating the talents and passions of ALL children, regardless of academic ability. It means that there is an increased likelihood that children will feel academic subjects are the only subjects of value. It means that kids who aren’t great at science or maths or languages will have their confidence and growth stunted before they’ve actually got started. It means many children will come out with lower grades in their GCSEs because they have been forced in to subjects they have no aptitude for or interest in. It means the arts will continue to be sidelined as ‘hobbies’ rather than of being a vital part of human society.
While it is important to recognise the pressures from the government, this petition is about putting our children’s welfare and future above league tables.
Sign this petition if you believe the children of Beckfoot should be able to freely use their non-compulsory options to choose subjects that align with their passions, talents and aspirations and that league tables should be secondary to their well-being and fulfilment.
