Pat Smith started this petition to Becket Chimney Corners YMCA

On May 12th, it was announced that summer camp would not occur at Becket Chimney Corners YMCA (BCCYMCA). As the entire camp community received this news, BCCYMCA notified the majority of its year-round employees that they would be terminated on June 12th. All the terminated people, many of whom had been working and involved in the camp community for decades, were told their jobs would not be viable for the future. BCCYMCA also told a number of them, if they happened to eventually reapply for their jobs down the line, they would be considered new hires, losing seniority and earned benefits.

There didn’t appear to be any fundraising during the spring at all, or any appeals to their generous community, to secure funds to retain their year-round employees. Fundraising resumed only after they terminated 2/3 of the year round staff. BCCYMCA also has stated they received "A high five figure grant from YUSA to support operations" on May 22.

Each for All - All For Each. Better Faithful Than Famous.

AGAPE: Living a life of unconditional love towards all humanity and not succeeding at the expense of others.

These are values that our camp community holds dear to our hearts. During a time in which uncertainty afflicts every member of our community, we demand BCCYMCA administration display compassion, loyalty, and openness. Camp staff are expected to set examples for campers by demonstrating camp values, yet administration has disregarded people in a manner untrue to these standards.

We understand that difficult financial decisions have to be made. However, denying many people their earned livelihood, even after camp reopens, is an extreme measure. As a community, we look out for one another. We refuse to accept this action by administration without justification.

We must demand that camp identify a solution that is not debilitating to longstanding members of our communities. These are people who have had their entire families go to BCCYMCA. These are people who have given large parts of their lives to make camp what it is today.

DEMANDS:

BCCYMCA must prioritize public accountability regarding the administration's financial and staff decisions, which resulted in the permanent termination of about 25 year-round employees. We demand a specific explanation on how BCCYMCA acquired a $4 million deficit.

BCCYMCA administration must remain faithful to all members of our community. They must offer options, without significant reduction in pay and benefits, to people who desire to return to their jobs at BCCYMCA.
