Due to the disease known as COVID-19, Oregon schools have been shut down until at least April 28th. With these school cancellations, students are losing over a month of essential education and lessons. I’m asking the Oregon Department of Education, as well as the Beaverton School District to attempt to find innovative ways to continue our schooling during this crisis. A lot of people are suffering without their schoolwork, which would be a welcome distraction to the community’s current mindset. Those already suffering from mental illness are most at risk for serious emotional and mental pain caused by this virus and the fear surrounding it.

Social distancing is a necessary precaution. But it is also leaving thousands of teens without contact to their peers and the people they love. Through online schooling, teens could reconnect  with their class and get the education they so clearly deserve.

I suggest that online schooling be offered, and that effective communication with peers and teachers is introduced. This may be a time of crisis, but if we take action together, we can improve the way in which we live through these hard times.

For students without internet access at home, many districts offer free hotspots to aid in their learning.
