Put "Barack Obama High School" back on Ballot: New vote on name for Ozen-Central HS Merger

Closing this petition as Beaumont United is already producing the uniforms for the new school. So the argument is effectively moot. However, we still want to support the new school as it remains on our original campus. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition. David Hebert
Usan Hebert High School at the address of 3443 Fannett Rd, Beaumont, TX 77705, was closed in 1982 due to desegregation by court order. Hebert High was later reopened in 1997 as Clifton J. Ozen High School. It was renamed after the successful Hebert High School football coach. However, the Fannett Rd. location, Blue and Gold colors, Panthers Mascot, and school slogan "Whatever Hebert/Ozen Does Must be the Best" remained. Only the Hebert name was lost.
This petition has been initiated because Usan Hebert High School was founded on historical Hebert family land. Usan Hebert donated this land in 1922 to provide a useful learning environment for black students of the Pear Orchard community who otherwise had no school of their own. Just because the land was donated, doesn't mean we no longer have "skin in the game". The Hebert family gracefully accepted the 1997 name change from Hebert to Ozen because that was what the Pear Orchard community desired at the time.
In 2018, following Hurricane Harvey, Ozen & Central High Schools have been compelled to merge into the original Hebert campus. The Beaumont ISD Board of Managers announced that the communities and students of both campuses would create committees to determine a new name. The Hebert family accepted that. The newly founded committees decided that "Barack Obama High School" was a name of significant interest that both communities would support and the name was submitted to the Beaumont ISD Board of Managers.
On February 14th, 2018, the announcement came over the respective school intercom systems that the voting booths were open for 9th-11th grade students to select the new school name, colors and mascot. However, Barack Obama's name was inexplicably NOT on the ballot.
The Hebert family did not support such a Black History Month moment and decision. As descendants of Usan Hebert, in respect for the land that Ozen High School is built upon, we are demanding a re-vote of the school name that will indeed include "Barack Obama High School" on the ballot.
