The exploitation of slavery and its history do not belong in modern America. This is offensive to anyone with normal sensitivities.

As a person who visited Hilton Head Island multiple times for vacation in the past and enjoyed its unique beauty, I have always been perplexed and dismayed at the Island's continued use of the word plantation, given this word's strong historical connection with slavery. It's a word that conjures the long history of racial inequity and violence, and causes pain for many. Why not simply change the names of communities to a more respectful, neutral word that is not associated with this history? This would demonstrate Hilton Head's compassion, social awareness, and modernization.

I live in Savannah Georgia we have visited this area frequently throughout the years and I have often wondered why the still use the word plantation very heavily in this area. It needs to change and I'm all for it.

My in-laws live there and every time we go visit I some what cringe when I go through the gate. I'm African-American and when I see they still have places called "plantations" it automatically brings me back to when I watched the movie "roots" in the 7th grade and how watching that movie opened my eyes to the negative history that took place on plantations. The name plantation is just a word ro romanticize something that otherwise makes people not understand all the harm that was done on plantations, who inflicted the harm on slaves, and who benefited from all the slave labor.

The word "plantation" should not be used for places in the American South, where it always meant a place where people were enslaved.

The definition of plantation is basically a farm not a gated community. SC officials should not being changing the dictionary's meaning due to their ignorance.
