Call for BCP Council to adopt gender-neutral language and terms.

Call for BCP Council to adopt gender-neutral language and terms.
On the 23rd of March 2021, BCP Council voted down a motion that proposed that gender-neutral language is adopted in all reports and formal communications. Councillors voted 42-25 against the motion, with six abstentions. The decision to vote against such a motion shows the council to be out of touch and against vital steps towards equality and inclusivity. The use of gender-specific terms can cause harm, distress, and disenfranchise certain groups or individuals.
Space Youth Project (Space Youth Project) has launched this petition, and is calling on BCP Council to listen to the views of all those who have signed in support. We are asking BCP Council to reconsider the decision to not adopt gender-neutral terms and language, as many other public bodies have done so already. Space Youth Project works with young LGBTQ+ people across Dorset, many of whom may not yet be open about their own gender identity or sexuality and for whom gender-neutral language is a key factor in their journey towards acceptance and pride.
Both the UN, the Civil Service, and many other organisations strongly support the use of gender-neutral terms and language in everyday and formal communications. Guidelines for gender-inclusive language in English and Breaking down gender stereotypes in legal writing. There are many reasons why adopting gender-neutral language is important, these include; ensuring all members of the workforce feel included and valued, promoting fairness and equality, as well as retaining staff. This link outlines some key reasons why gender-neutral terms are vital; 4 Reasons Why Gender-Neutral Language Matters.
It is clear that by continuing to use gender-specific language BCP Council is both out of step with current good practice regarding equality and inclusion, and further is showing total disregard towards the feelings and existence of anyone who does not identify as a binary gender.
This petition will be presented to the BCP full council meeting on the 20th of May via a Youtube Livestream (BCP Council - Youtube Channel).
