IPL opportunities for Associate nations

IPL opportunities for Associate nations

Players from the non test playing nations have not been able to get IPL contracts. The reason is simple. The current quota is 8 overseas players allowed in the squad(out of which only a maximum of 4 can play). That means only a maximum of 80 players will be in the squad after the auction next season. It is not possible for players of associate nations to get a look in as they would take up an overseas slot in the squad and playing 11. I am proposing that the number of overseas players in the playing eleven be expanded to 5 and squad limit increased to 10.
My proposal will have a multifold positive impact. The 1st is an obvious. The associate players will gain a lot of exposure to high class coaches, players and analysts. That in turn would help these players develop better at an international stage. In the 2021 T20 world cup it is clear to see that there is talent and cricket smarts in the associate nations. What they really need is experience at playing against higher class of players on a more regular basis. It would make international matches between test and non test playing nations more competitive.
It would be good for the IPL teams too as these associate players would most probably be available for the whole tournament. The tournament is set to become longer and thus not all foreign players will be available for the whole time. These associate players are most likely to be available for the full length of time.
Finally it would do great things for broadcasters too. More associate players playing would mean that the IPL could sell their broadcast rights at a higher rate. Also ICC events would be more competitive, driving interest in the game, driving the penetration of the game to more markets, making more money. It is a win win situation for all concerned.
