At TDOR, it is important to keep focus on those who truly suffer and continue to be at risk for violence, whether somewhere else or in our own community. At the same time, we need to continue the work on the changes needed by gender diverse people everywhere. Think globally, act locally. Those trapped in lives of violence need beacons of hope that somewhere there is a better life, and our own neighbors, trapped in their lives, need visible signals of a vibrant community awaiting them. While in its rawest form intolerance of gender diversity is expressed as physical violence, our own province continues to use gender in allocating rights to its citizens.
We are asking the Government of BC to act on four issues of concern for the BC trans community:
1> Immediately cease the illegal non-medical use of gender to allocate trans healthcare.
Let our doctors decide like they do for everyone else.
2> Commence a Community Accountability Review of the BC trans health program. We are waiting 50% longer for gender surgery than the rest of Canada. Let us have a say in our healthcare.
3> Commence a Community Council to advise on the use of gender markers.
Let us protect our gender markers the way we protect our Social Insurance Numbers.
4> Commence a Community Council to advise on trans content for GSA and SOGI program.
Let us tell our own story.
We look forward to action on these items to continue BC's role as a global leader as in trans rights and so, remain a beacon to those less fortunate.
