In the next year, Handsworth Secondary is going to be taken down and rebuilt. As of right now the Ministry of Education funding for the new school ($62.3 million) does not include a new track, for which estimated costs would be $2.5-$3 million. With the removal of the Handsworth track there will be no tracks on the North Shore that races can be hosted on, and elementary/high school track athletes will have to commute to Vancouver which will heavily affect participation numbers in the sport. Countless members of the North Vancouver community who enjoy running on the track  as well as PE and conditioning students at Handsworth, will be left with no local track to run on. Many people believe that the track is an extremely important part of our community but as of right now, if there is to be a track at the new school it will have to be externally funded.
