Stop child care facilities from denying children who are not fully potty-trained

Hello Fellow Parents,

There is currently a rule allowed in BC child care facilities which can cause emotional and physical harm to our children and I am petitioning in hopes of seeing this changed. Currently, several facilities who care for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old have implemented a rule that allows them to refuse care to children who are not 100% potty trained. This is alarming because most children are not fully potty trained until they are around 3 or 4 years old, and even then, accidents can happen.

This poses a problem for parents of children who aren't quite ready. The inconveniences of having to look for a new day care at the drop of a hat aside, this has the potential of causing psychological and physical damages to the child. Imagine explaining to your pre-school aged child that they have to leave day care. Imagine them questioning why they won't see their friends each day anymore. How do you explain the move to this innocent heart without breaking it? From a physical perspective, pushing a child to potty train when they are not physically ready can be a breeding ground for chronic UTI's and other future incontinence issues. This article by Pediatric Urologist, Dr. Steve J Hodges, can provide you with additional scientific insight on the subject (http://bit.ly/2w8jXh4). The bottom line is: this is not healthy for the long-term development of our children.

I am passionate about this as my son was removed from day care because at 3 years old he still had accidents; once I had my eyes opened to the situation, I realized it was happening to countless other families in BC as well. This is unacceptable. Our children should never be shamed or denied from care for something that is normal at this age. I will be bringing this petition to the Director of BC Health Care and Care Facilities to look into disallowing this rule. Help the voices of numerous families be heard by signing today.

Our most vulnerable citizens thank you for your support.
