Journalists reporting objectively on the news must keep a professional distance from the subjects of their reports. Jeremy Corbyn is referred to on second reference as “Corbyn.” David Cameron was referred to as “Cameron.” This was correct journalistically.

Yet the BBC continually refers to Boris Johnson as “Boris,” making him seem like a friend, or a neighbor we all know from the pub, not the Prime Minister of the country, responsible for what he says and does, for our public services, for our diplomatic relations with other countries, and for much more. This is unprofessional of the BBC.

Whether this is a bad habit reporters have unthinkingly fallen into, or hints at a bias, it must stop - immediately, given there is a General Election on 12 December.

Please sign this petition to ask the BBC to start referring to the UK prime minister on second reference as “Johnson,” “Mr. Johnson,” even “Prime Minister Johnson,” but not “Boris.” We need the BBC at its professional best, for the sake of our democracy.
