We support returning the Bayside Veterans Memorial Obelisk Monument back to the site of its original home in front of the Bayside LIRR train station, where it can be appropriately honored by current and future residents of the community.
The monument was moved in the 1980's from its second location in Chrocheron Park to the NE corner of No. Blvd/Clearview Expressway, because it was the subject of graffiti. In its current location it is relatively obscured from view, which has managed to keep it graffiti-free. But in this location, it no longer effectively serves its purpose as a memorial. The axiom: "Out of sight, out of mind" comes to mind. It is no longer an active part of the Bayside community and the service of those men and women whose names are inscribed upon its frame are not being noted by those very citizens to whom their service was given. We feel it should be returned to its original home, where the people of Bayside and NE Queens may justly honor its veterans.
