Like many college students, I was trying to make use of audiobooks for my class assignments, as it's less time consuming and easier for me to focus on audiobooks than it is for me to focus on physical copies. However, despite having to read over 6 books over the course of the semester for one class alone, only one of those books in that class is available as an audiobook. This makes it harder for me to learn and digest the information – I am an auditory learner, as well as a tactile learner, so being able to treat these books as a type of lecture is more beneficial than anything else. It also allows me to do chores, make dinner, drive, and even shower while still doing my work. However, after I looked through the rest of my reading assignments throughout all of my classes, only one professor took the time to find books that had audiobooks to go with it. This dedication to physical copies is harmful for disabled students, especially those with very poor eyesight who can't afford glasses or contacts, students with dyslexia, students with ADHD, as well as students who simply just learn by hearing. Academic books should be more available to students, especially if they are published by a university press, in order for students to reach their full potential.
