According to ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders):

42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner.
81% of 10 year old children are afraid of being fat.
46% of 9-11 year-olds are “sometimes” or “very often” on diets.
35-57% of adolescent girls engage in crash dieting, fasting, self-induced vomiting, diet pills, or laxatives.

These are devastating statistics that could be drastically decreased if we were to shift the focus within school's health curriculum. Children should, under no circumstances, be weighed by a teacher in a classroom or school gymnasium, especially in front of their peers. The focus of health in school aged children should be on choosing foods to nourish your body and exercise to strengthen your muscles. Weight and weight loss has no place in the school setting, and should be between a child, their parent, and their pediatrician.
