chrissy aman started this petition to Bates College

John Cole Olivier is a first-year student at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The college is requiring him to return to his home in Los Angeles, California and complete the semester remotely due to missing three Covid-19 tests. John Cole made up each of these Covid-19 tests, as directed by the FAQs about testing on the Bates website. The college claims that this is a violation of the Public Health Agreement that all students were required to sign in order to study in-person this fall. However, several other students have missed as many or more Covid-19 tests as John Cole, without facing the same repercussions. It seems that these students were all athletes, which demonstrates that Bates favors students on athletic teams over non-athletes. The Public Health Agreement is clear and just, but it should be enforced fairly across the student body. Studying remotely is more difficult for many students and poses potential social, emotional, and mental hardships. John Cole should be allowed to continue studying in-person and living on campus for the remainder of the semester.
