Prateek Narayanan started this petition to Baskin School of Engineering

For the upcoming quarter, CSE 102 filled on the first day of enrollment and the number of people on the waitlist outnumbered the number of people enrolled. Although the Computer Science and Engineering department added an additional section for 102, some students signed up in a haste, assuming it was with the same professor, Patrick Tantalo. Moments after some students signed up, the department sent a followup email saying that it would be taught by Allen Van Gelder instead. The number of students who've signed up for Professor Van Gelder's courses both now and in the past doesn't even amount to half the class size. Many students would rather remain on the waitlist, hopeful that they could get into Professor Tantalo's class. Additionally, there was an incident involving Professor Van Gelder in Winter 2019 where faculty from UCSC and other universities came to the conclusion that he doesn't know what he's doing and that it would be hard to get rid of him because he's tenured, and he is also to teach the course in Spring 2020 due to the lack of faculty qualified to teach the course now. I believe that in the spring, the students would benefit more from Professor Sesh teaching the course instead of Professor Van Gelder. I, along with others, had the privilege of taking courses with him and strongly feel that he will not only make sure we learn the material well, but also prepare us well for interviews and working in the tech industry. For the money this school receives, all we expect in return is a quality education, which I believe we can get by learning from knowledgeable instructors like Professor Sesh.
