Dear Barrington High School,

With the recent announcement that school will be moved to distance learning for the forseeable future, it is imperative to understand the effect that this has on the student population of Barrington High School. With all students at home for the foreseeable future, the ability to achieve an enriched learning experience is not possible. This is why we must move to an A/Pass/Fail grading system.

Due to the fact that Barrington High School is an immersive and diverse school, we have many students that are dealing with this situation in many different ways. Some students may have to find jobs, take care of loved ones, or even simply take on more arduous tasks at home. This means that for some, the window for an in depth education experience such as the one provided at the high school is very difficult. In order to accommodate those in need, an A/Pass/Fail grading system would be immensely helpful in relieving some of the stress induced by this pandemic.

Some students are also having a difficult time connecting to the school internet services because of the surge in usage across the country. This adds another layer of stress for some students, as they are now worried about being able to submit or view assignments on time. An A/Pass/Fail system would work wonders for those who are facing this issue, as it gives them more leeway to turn in assignments when they can.

If an A/Pass/Fail grading system were to be adopted for the Spring 2020 semester of this school year, it is important to note that this should be an optional way of grading. Many students may have a reason to not adopt this, as they need certain grades for college or for another activity. This is why it must be a choice to use this grading system, and efforts must be put into having students make the best choice for themselves in the means of an informed decision. Pros and cons from each teacher should be presented to the students so that they can make this choice.

With that being said, I am suggesting that these changes should be made to this Spring 2020 semester. One, students have the option to take their classes on an A/Pass/Fail scale in order to ensure an equitable learning chance for all. Two, students are given proper information by staff members in order to make an informed decision on whether or not they want to use the A/Pass/Fail grading system.

During this unprecedented and scary time, it is important to keep in mind what’s really important, which is the physical and mental health of the students at Barrington High School. Our community will continue to remain strong and will recover from this situation, but right now we must take the necessary steps to do so, which includes adding an A/Pass/Fail option for the Spring 2020 semester.
