120 years of country tradition could come to an end due to a Barossa Council policy

A Barossa Council proposal is set to shut down a local country show that has been a feature of community life for  over 120 years.

A proposed Barossa Council policy which would no longer allow horses on the ovals within the Council Area is up for consideration which will put both the Angaston and Tanunda shows in jeopardy.

Horses are the heart of any country show, with Tanunda having a packed 1 day program and Angaston show being considered one of the premier events on the equestrian calendar, with a full three day horse program.  The horses are great to watch, draw a crowd and bring much needed revenue to these community events.

Regional Australia is crying out for more support to help protect and promote their communities and heritage, and the country show is integral to any community, showcasing local crafts people and provides fundraising opportunities for community groups. How can small country towns have facilities dedicated purely to sports to the exclusion of all other community events.

Council has stated that they want to maintain the ovals purely for sporting surface and to encourage AFL games to the region.  The alternate option provided by council is for a local facility not within the community, and for all horse events to be held at Mount Pleasant, a facility 35 km away.

Changes made by the Barossa Council in the past few years banning vehicles from the ovals, has already put pressure on the two annual Shows and has seen significant changes to many popular events, including sheep shearing competitions, tractor pull, CFS displays and the grand parade.

The show committees have been working with council to implement the vehicle ban, but the horse ban is much harder to overcome.

This policy change which doesn’t allow horses, vehicles or other high foot traffic activities will have effect on other community events as well. This leaves the community questioning  how can so many other   South Australian communities have a multipurpose oval and why can’t this be achieved within the Barossa?

Even the Adelaide Oval is used as a multiple purpose facility, which holds world class sporting events, Rock concerts(U2 & Motley Crew) as well various other entertainment including Monster trucks.

We are calling on council to review this proposed policy and to show their support for the local show and the local community.
