Lacey Zorn started this petition to Barnwell County Council and

We would like to see Barnwell County take a chance and use the 750k in the county to help generate revenue or tourism in our area instead of giving the funds away to the YMCA to fund a pool that will only benefit their members.

If the arena was off the table, other options should have been presented prior to this being voted on. This was not the intent for the money. We need growth in this county that a pool isn’t going to provide. The economy here will never change as long as senseless decisions like this are being made!

Taken from an article in the Augusta Chronicle link attached below- “Matt Mullen, area director for the Aiken/Barnwell YMCA, also supports the [arena] project. He, along with Family Y of Greater Augusta CEO Danny McConnell and General Manager Bill Crowder helped recruit the architectural firm and pay for the renderings. He reminded those attending of the people who "had faith in Barnwell County" and created the Barnwell County Family Y which is now one of the fastest growing Family YMCA's.”

Please take the time to read these articles I have sourced. Funny how the opinions change now that the money given specifically for the arena is now going their way for the pool!  So much so, that the YMCA just publicly announced the pool deal in an article this week!

The same wishy washy mindset is coming from Councilman Jerry Creech. This was taken from that same article- “All the funding for the project is to come from private donations, not taxpayers, said Creech. Eventually, he said, the arena is expected to be self-sustaining. A checking account is being set up at the Barnwell County Treasurer's Office and all donations will be earmarked only for the arena. "Donations are tax-deductible," said Creech.”

Now he’s the one misleading council and swaying the vote towards the YMCA! What happened to this donor money for the arena, Jerry? Is Barnwell donating it also, or returning it to the donors?

So many questions. So little answers. So much unexplained. Such a huge shift in direction after the council “Officially threw its support behind the arena project”! Not to mention the narrow mindset! We need people who think big and are willing to take chances!

I’m just not okay with all of these deals being done behind closed doors without the people of the community knowing or getting a chance to voice their opinion anymore! It’s obvious it’s not about need, it’s about want, and that’s not how you spend other people’s money.

If you think this money should have been used by the county to fund a public/county owned project and not given away to a private organization- PLEASE SIGN & SHARE!

THIS MONEY WAS FOR- SC Parks, Recreation & Tourism- Not a Members Only Pool at your local YMCA! Here’s the proof out the horses mouth!

“South Carolina Senator Brad Hutto will present Barnwell County with a $750,000 check on Tuesday.

The check will assist in funding a multi-purpose arena. State funding will be given by South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

Hutto Said, “The Barnwell County legislative Delegation worked together to secure this funding to jump start the county’s effort to provide a facility that will greatly enhance the community’s ability to attract quality events to the area”.”
