LET THERE BE LIGHT - TURN ON LIGHTS IN BARNET PARKS

Let there be light,
No one should be afraid of the dark. Let's get lights in the park.
We, the Nutmeg Youth Action Team, believe that parks are an amazing asset to the Barnet community and should be accessible to everyone, no matter the time of day.
That's why our project is to turn on the lights in Barnet parks when it gets dark.
Do you long to play football into the evening, with no worry about the time? Do you want to play with your kids, and not have to usher them away as dusk approaches? Or do you simply want to take the shortcut back home without feeling scared?
This should all be possible. But when we asked local residents how they felt about the lighting in their local park, the responses were not positive. Most focused on their fear of dark parks, including how they were "unsafe" and "nerve racking" to walk through at night; no one should have to feel like that, especially in their own area. But they're right to be scared - there is a worryingly high number of violent crimes committed in Barnet parks, and just this July saw 7 crimes of violence against people in Watling Park alone.
Winter is coming, so this problem is more pressing than ever. Soon, the parks will be pitch black by 5pm. Want to walk the dog after then? Or go for a stoll? Or just jog through the park? Too dark for any of that.
But you can make that change.
The Nutmeg Youth Action Team are a group of young people aged 16-19 who care about improving the community for Barnet residents.
