Many people who work in the barista profession do not earn a living wage, especially in major metropolitan areas. Oftentimes baristas work two or three jobs in order to pay rent and bills. This divide between the economic position of customers and that of the people serving them creates a power dynamic that is not conducive to genuine interaction.

For Here, Please is a non-profit that uses plastic-reduction and environmental sustainability as a jumping off point for deeper conversations of pay equity, community sustainability, and worker's rights: https://forhereplease.com

People are on the go, rushed, and distracted. We are more stressed than ever before; often we prioritize digital lives over real interactions with the people we are coming into contact with. When is the last time you had a meaningful interaction with the people who serve you in various times of the day? The barista? The waitress? The dishwasher?

For Here, Please seeks to disrupt this culture: by helping people choose sustainable options for consuming food and beverage, we hope to open a larger conversation about service sector pay, real life interactions, meeting neighbors, and equity.

The For Here Please Angle: Slow Down and Talk to the People Around You!

To-go culture involves a lot of plastic packaging. Interactions are rushed and full of waste. We want to disrupt this culture. By slowing down key interactions and routines, FHP seeks to help people choose the slow, careful, thoughtful option instead of the convenient, rushed, or disposable option. FHP seeks to facilitate well designed, healthier, and more sustainable situations, accessible to people from all walks of life.

The main work of FHP is getting people to slow down, get to know their baristas, take their coffee "For Here, Please". Our main work allows for us to raise awareness about barista pay by encouraging others to tip better, donate to cafes, and come together as a community to make sure all people who serve a community are paid a living wage. And not just a living wage if they are working 3 jobs-- but a living wage by just working one job.
