Oppose the Misguided Owyhee Canyonlands Monument Proposal

This petition had 2,823 supporters

Residents of Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho support conservation. We want the best for our families and communities, and wish to protect those things we love, like our lands. This is why I am opposing the Owyhee Canyonlands Monument Proposal.

This misguided proposal, introduced by special interest groups and extreme environmentalists, would lock up 2.5 million acres of land and do the following to our local communities, region, and the canyonlands themselves.

  1. Eliminates local control of lands and hands it over to the federal government and special interest groups.
  2. Jeopardizes the ecosystem and safety of the Canyonlands by enacting misguided and failed land management policies. These are the same policies that allow invasive species to thrive and create wildfires like we’ve seen throughout California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
  3. Limits access and local sustainability by restricting rights to ranching, hunting, recreation and economic development.
  4. Ignores years of hard work and collaboration. For years, residents, agencies, and organizations have been working together to improve the sustainability of the Owyhee region while maintaining and protecting the ecosystem of the Owyhee Canyonlands. Millions of dollars are being spent on sage grouse habitat restoration and preservation, water projects, and protecting the local ecosystem from the spread of invasive species such as Medusa Head. Now outside special interest groups are threatening this collaboration.

Garfield County, Utah is an example of how the empty promises of a proposed monument affect a region.

“Since the creation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in 1996, the job opportunities in the region have declined so severely that families have been moving out of the county at a rapid rate,” said Garfield County Commissioner Leland Pollock. “They’re constantly trying to reduce grazing; they have eliminated our timber mill. Look at the access to public land. They’re constantly trying to close roads.”

There is a reason so many are opposing the misguided Owyhee Canyonlands Monument Proposal. It is bad for our region and bad for the Owyhee Canyonlands. Don’t be fooled by proponents of the monument that provide misinformation and distortions that twist the facts like a pretzel.

Please join me in opposing the misguided Owyhee Canyonlands Monument Proposal.
