Dear President Obama,

As you know, on October 9, 2012, Malala Yousafzai, was gunned down for the “crime” of going to school. Today the world stands with this remarkable girl, a girl so brave she stood up to the Taliban, a group so evil they stalk and murder the innocent for the “sin” of disagreement.

Tarek Fatah, of Canada, has started a petition to nominate Malala for the Noble Peace Prize. Petitions from Germany, England and France have swiftly followed.

Also, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now U.N. Special Envoy for Global Education, has authored a petition to Pakistan and all countries to ensure education for all children. It is aptly called “I am Malala,” www.educationenvoy.org or www.iammalala.org.

Girls light candles and hold them high. Malala t-shirts boldly sport the slogan:
“I am Malala.”

These are bold times for girls and women. Girls are going to school in places where it was unthinkable a generation ago. Women fill the jobs of doctor, lawyer, politician. Travesties of justice -- rape, battering, “honor”killings, sex slavery, servitude, genital mutilation -- are no longer in the closet. The world knows the truth now. Civilization itself is at a crossroads.

There is yet much to do, as Malala’s wounds attest. But the hopes and dreams of girls throughout the world are no longer hidden – silent, muffled, afraid. “I am Malala.”

President Obama, please join the millions who stand with Malala Yousafzai in her brave fight for equal education for girls by nominating her for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Respectfully submitted,
