Democracy Stands With France

On the evening of 13 November 2015, a series of mass shootings and suicide bombings occurred in Paris and Saint-Denis, France. At the writing of this petition it is reported that at least 128 people were killed in what will surely be the deadliest attack on French soil since World War II. The attacks were claimed by the militant organization ISIS, which French President François Hollande has declared as an act of war. The leaders of many nations have also condemned these senseless acts of terrorism. The US, Canada, Britain, China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran have all publicly opposed these heinous crimes against humanity.

This petition is for President Obama to issue a presidential proclamation for the flags of the United States of America to be flown at half-mast in solidarity with the French people. Flags at half-mast has traditionally symbolized respect, mourning, or distress. In the U.S. it is commonly done as a show of respect, mourning, or distress for domestic incidents, but through presidential proclamations, has been done for non-domestic events as a show of respect and support. The flags of the United States of America were flown at half-mast for the death of Pope John Paul II and the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.

Mr. President,

We, the American people, petition you to show the people of France, and more importantly the democratic populations of the world, that we stand united with our allies in the fight for the democratic and humanitarian values that we hold near and dear through the symbolic gesture of flying the red, white, and blue at half mast. Many world leaders including yourself have agreed that this is not only an attack on France, but an attack on democracy and humanity.
