Dear Mr. President:
Before it is too late, we strongly urge your prompt attention upon the besieged Kurdish town of Kobane in Syria—where the merciless bombing and shelling by Islamic State militants for several weeks has brutally driven out 390,000 of the town’s 400,000 people.
The vicious fighting in Kobane has rightly been compared to historic Stalingrad, as well as Picasso’s famous painting of Guernica. We sincerely hope it will be remembered as the former, not the latter.
Everyone should be doing all they can to stop this “atrocious terrorist” assault, declared UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura in highlighting the horrific plight triggered by this latest assault on Kobane.
That’s why we solidly join with Mr. de Mistura in urging you to establish a humanitarian corridor into Kobane from the Mursitpinar border crossing in Turkey—to prevent further wanton deaths.
We also agree that armed Kurds from Turkey should be allowed to join their besieged brethren inside Kobane—and that Turkey should facilitate that instead of blocking it.
Finally, we hope you will arm the brave fighting units of the Kurdish YPG—where men and women heroically fight side by side—the most effective force against these fanatics, whose ultimate goal includes the destruction of America itself!
