Alisha Hawkins started this petition to Superintendent and the Banta Elementary Board Dan Moore

We are the Founding Families of NextGeneration STEAM Academy, and we are requesting that the board reconsider the recent ban on siblings of out of district students.  Founding Families, which consists of all the families admitted to either STEAM ACADEMY or the campus preschool, CDI the very first year of operation, were assured repeatedly that all of the children in our families would be able to graduate from STEAM.  When the school opened, it had recruited majority of its students from other districts.  Some families even turned down other charter schools for the promises made by the administration at STEAM.  In an email from the school’s administration in 2016, a top administrator writes “I do not have a crystal ball to see far into the future, but what I will tell you is we are committed to our founding families, it does not matter to us where they live, once they came to us our first year, they became ours.  Our plans are to do everything we can to bring in the new siblings and see that each and every one of our founding children graduate 8th grade from Next Gen.”  While we understand that the Banta School District is now under new leadership, we feel it is important for District to honor their commitment to these families.  Many of these children live near schools with low test scores, high bullying rates, and impactment (meaning they could end up being bussed to outside cities). To phase out current students or force families out by rejecting siblings would cause these children to take a step back in their education.

The District has been profiting financially from our families for these past 3 years and to ignore the fact that these Founding Families have been putting their blood, sweat, and tears into this school from day one is a disservice to these children.  In these families you will find PTO members, room parents, volunteers, chaperones, even staff members, all of whom are proud of the school we have been building.  To this day, Founding Families are the most active volunteers for the school.  If the District were to grandfather in the siblings as promised the number is low enough that the impact to enrollment would be minimal, especially when you consider the recently approved campus expansion.

This school is like a family, we have been through all the ups and downs of opening a new school and many of our teachers are already familiar with these siblings and look forward to having them as students.  Please help us in our fight to uphold the Banta School District to their word by adding a Founding Families clause to their by-laws, to prevent this threat from recurring every time there is a change in leadership.
